Hash and Weed Flyer – Digitalization and information initiative

Project Category

Project leader

Date

2023

Role

As initiator and project leader I was responsible for the complete digitalization and relaunch of the Hash and Weed Flyer. This included not only modernizing the content, but also developing an effective communication strategy, choosing the right platform and facilitating distribution via coffee shops.

Date

2023

The Hash and Weed Flyer has had a permanent place in Dutch coffee shops since 1993 and plays a crucial role in providing objective and reliable information about cannabis use. The original flyer was the result of a collaboration between Leidseplein Beheer B.V., Adviesburo Drugs, Jellinek and the Bond van Cannabis Detaillisten (BCD). Although the advice is still relevant, the physical format was no longer sufficient to effectively reach a modern and international audience.

In view of the 30th anniversary and the changing times, there was a need for a digital evolution of the flyer. The aim was to make the valuable information about dosages, effects and risks more accessible, both for Dutch consumers and international visitors.

Actions:
1. Modernisation and digitalisation of the flyer:
- The original text of the flyer was carefully revised and rewritten in modern, accessible language. The preservation of the original message and scientific basis was central. - The choice of Instagram as a platform was strategic: it offers automatic translation into the language of the visitor and is in line with the way in which younger and international target groups consume information.

2. Practical distribution via QR codes:
- Design and production of stickers with QR codes that provide direct access to the digital flyer on Instagram.
- The stickers were made available free of charge to coffee shop owners and are easy to place at counters or tables, so that visitors have easy access to the information.

3. Communication to members and stakeholders:
- Drafting and sending an informative letter to the members of the BCD, explaining the importance of digitalisation and providing practical information about the distribution of the stickers.
- Emphasising the value of this initiative as information material and the possibility of positioning it as additional mandatory information for policy makers.

4. Development of visual and modern design:
- The design of the stickers and digital content was aligned with the existing hash and weed flyer. The combination of recognisability and the clear message makes the flyer effective and accessible.

Result:
The renewed Hash and Weed Flyer marks a successful transition to the digital age. By using Instagram as a platform and QR codes for distribution, the flyer is now more accessible than ever. Automatic translation ensures that international visitors can immediately understand the information, while the sticker can be placed easily and effectively in coffee shops.

This initiative combines tradition with innovation and contributes to responsible cannabis use, breaking stigmas and reaching a wider audience. The involvement and support from the industry have ensured broad support and successful implementation in the coffee shops.
